What are Port Wine Stains ?

It is a red or purple area of skin, it is present from birth. Most occur on the face but any area of the skin can be affected. A localised area of abnormal dilated blood vessels causes Port Wine Stains. If left untreated, these blood vessels tend to darken over the years as the blood flowing through them becomes more sluggish. The overlying skin is smooth and flat at first, by middle age the overlying skin becomes thickened and lumpy (a cobblestone appearance).

How does the laser treatment for Port Wine Stains work ?

 ● Before modern laser treatments, covering the Port Wine Stain with special camouflage creams was the only option of treatment. Modern laser treatment can now give excellent results.

 ● Laser energy is delivered through to the skin into the dilated blood vessels, after heating the blood vessels, their walls collapse and seal shut. The sealed vessels are then broken down and absorbed by the body.

The treatment for Port Wine Stains takes around 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area.

The number of treatment sessions will depend on the size of the Port Wine Stains, as their size can vary from a few millimetres to many centimetres across.
