What are the latest hair restoration techniques?

Simply ... the latest hair restoration techniques involve 2 steps:

1. Hair removal i.e. Hair extraction from the donor area.

2. Hair transplantation into the bald / thinning area.

Hair Removal / Hair Extraction Methods

Either one of these two methods are currently being used by hair transplant clinics :

1. Strip surgery hair removal

2. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Hair transplant Before
Hair transplant After

Strip Surgery Hair Removal

This is an invasive procedure, where a long strip of hair bearing scalp skin measuring around 20-25cm in length,1cm-2.5cm in width

Is removed from the donor area (usually the back of the head) using a scalpel. The donor area is stitched and subsequently 4 weeks are required for full healing. In order to avoid stretching of the donor scar, 2 layers of stitches must be used and left in the skin for 2 weeks.

Post operatively, clients may complain of scalp numbness for many months and sometimes permanently as the scalpel cuts through skin, nerves and blood vessels when extracting the strip from the back of the head:

Disadvantages of strip surgery hair removal

It is invasive surgery.

There is a risk of developing scarring over the strip extraction site.

There is possibility of numbness or decreased sensation over the strip extraction site

The option of a short haircut is gone forever due to a scar or line always being visible at the back of the head.

There is a possibility of suture scars, keloid scars, staple scars and stretch back tension scars.

Clients are unable to play sports or weight train for 4 weeks.

Folicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

This technique does not require a donor area. The hair follicles are instead directly extracted one by one using custom made, precise micro-surgical tools which are less than a millimeter in diameter.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is simple and painless.

The donor area heals within 5 days.

There is no risk of nerve damage.

Which is the superior method of hair extraction / hair removal ?

In our opinion the strip surgery method will become an outdated method.

The FUE method requires a highly experiences hair transplant doctor to extract the hair follicles undamaged, it is labour intensive, this is why the success of this procedure is dependent on the skill and patience of the hair transplant surgeon. It is considered the superior method of extraction.

Hair Restoration

Follicle Unit Transplantation (FUT) is the hair restoration procedure when extracted hair is transplanted into the bald or thinning areas in their naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs. Single hairs are used for the hairline and groups of 2/3/4 for density behind the hair line. Each follicular unit has to be extracted and transplanted with its sebaceous glands, nerve and blood supply.

The skin plug or otherwise referred to as the follicular unit contains, in this case, a single hair; it is complete with its neurovascular bundle and sebaceous gland, which must be meticulously removed and transplanted by the hair surgeon, this is an essential part of the Third Generation FUE hair transplantation technique.

How a follicular unit looks when extracted by FUE.
In this case the follicular units contain:
• Single hair
• Double hairs
• Group of 4 hairs

The 3rd GENERATION FUE Hair Transplant Technique at Selston Cosmetic Clinic

Computer digital scanning is used to identify the strongest donor follicles, prior to the procedure and this is to protect future hair loss.

Individual hair follicles are removed separately using the micro extractor by the experienced hair transplant surgeon wearing high magnification loupes glasses.

The specific hair follicles are placed meticulously into zones of hair loss using the patented implanter pen. The experienced hair transplant doctors use this precision implement to implant the hair to imitate the angle and direction of growth of each person's original hair which is unique to them.

Hair extraction is simple, painless and the donor area heals within 5 days.

No risk of nerve damage (numbness or decreased sensation) as no scalpels or stitches are used.

New hair grows naturally in its new location permanently..

Hair regrowth is usually seen after 16 weeks.

3,000-5,000 hairs can be extracted/ implanted per day.

Bandaging is not necessary after the procedure. Clients leave the clinic as they enter.

Preparations to make on the morning of your Procedure

Shower and wash your hair thoroughly using your regular shampoo. Do not apply sprays, gels, or any other styling products to your hair. If you wear a hair system, please remove it before shampooing and do not wear again until after your procedure.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and a front-fastening top, not one you pull over your head – this will prevent your transplanted hair becoming dislodged immediately after your Hair Transplant Procedure .

Avoid all caffeinated beverages such as coffee, throughout the day, as these may increase your sensitivity to medications used during the procedure.

Otherwise, eat breakfast as normal. Subject to the time of your Hair Transplant Procedure, we will provide you with lunch and snacks. Please let us know if you have any special dietary needs.

At Selston Cosmetic Clinic on day of procedure

On your arrival at Selston Cosmetic Clinic, your hair transplant team will review your procedure consent form with you, ensure all relevant paperwork is completed and answer any questions you may have.

During your initial consultation, you will have decided where you want your new hairline to come, and it will have been marked and photographed. Your consultant will now mark your scalp to define the extent of the procedure, and will discuss any concerns you may have.

You will now be offered the option of a sedative, such as Valium, to relax you before the start of your Procedure. You can also choose to listen to music, to watch movies, or to just chat with staff during the procedure.

A local anaesthetic is now applied around the perimeter of the scalp. Once the scalp is entirely numb, the rest of your Procedure is completely painless. Should your procedure be an extensive one, lasting more than 5-6 hours, an additional anaesthetic will be applied before the first one wears off.
